Anhinga Broken Wing

A few weeks ago we received an Anhinga that was unable to fly. Anhinga’s (sometimes called snakebirds) are diving birds that mostly live in slow moving shallow waters. They live in Florida year round and hunt small fish.

X-rays revealed a fracture to the ulna bone in the left wing. Our vet decided to put a pin in the bone to help it heal properly but unfortunately the bird was too sensitive to the anesthesia to be put under for the surgery. Instead we wrapped it like a cast and and every three days we take the wrap off and do physical therapy to make sure wing doesn’t lose strength. As of now the fracture is healing and the bird is doing well. To follow its process follow the link to check on current patients on our home page. Case # 20170544.
