The Seabird Station recently took delivery of a newly restored work boat. The staff and owners of T-n-T Custom Marine of North Miami volunteered their time and resources to restore it to working order. This was made possible by the donation of a new outboard engine by Mercury Marine.

This boat is now used by the Seabird Station to search for and rescue injured wildlife, primarily around the north end of Biscayne Bay. We are also using it to monitor nearby pelican rookeries. In the last two weeks it has been used extensively as a filming platform by a visiting film crew from Japanese Public Broadcasting.

Our heartfelt thanks go out to T-n-T Curtom Marine and Mercury Marine. Without their support this would not have been possible.

We lease our current facility from the Miami-Dade Parks Department. Since moving in to this facility in 1992, our annual animal intake has quadrupled. We have also seen a rapid increase in foot traffic and phone calls.

To keep pace, we are raising funds to construct a new facility. While we would like to remain at Pelican Harbor, we are exploring the prospect of moving to another property.

Brian Fox, PHSS executive director, had a great time today speaking to the congregation at Church by the Sea in Bal Harbour on Halloween weekend. Brian spoke about the many positive experiences he’s had working with people in Miami to help injured wildlife. Special thanks to Rev. Barbara Asinger and the congregation at Church by the Sea.

Special part of the presentation at the Church by the Sea was talk to the congregation’s children about the importance of protecting the world’s oceans. Children learned many facts about pelicans and very important thing -- if in the future they want to take care of the animals they have to be neat!

We are no stranger to the effects of discarded fishing tackle on our wildlife and ecosystems. It is far too easy to walk or kayak the shores of Biscayne Bay and find discarded fishing tackle entangled in trees or strewn across rocks. Countless scores of birds, mammals and reptiles become entangled and die in this material every year.

The Seabird Station has long been involved in the State of Florida’s Monofilament Recycling Program. Through this program, the Florida Fish & Wildlife Service provides monofilament recycling stations to any interested facility. These stations are usually installed at marinas, fishing piers and waterfront parks.

The Seabird Station recently teamed up with the Coastal Cleanup Corporation (CCC) to expand this effort in southern Biscayne Bay. The CCC is a non-profit group focused on coordinating and expanding beach clean ups.

To learn more about the CCC, please click here.

To learn more about the monofilament recycling program, or to request recycling stations in Miami-Dade County, contact the Seabird Station at info@pelicanharbor.org.
