We finished the renovation of an aviary for our twenty-five permanent residents. They’re here at the Seabird Station because their injuries are so severe that survival in the wild is not possible. Many have amputated wings that prevent flight, or foot injuries that prevent effective swimming.

In April, these residents will be moved across the sidewalk to their new residence, double the size of their current home, with a tree, two pools and a great view! Look for them in their new home on your next visit!
This Blue Heron came into the Seabird Station back in January 2012. He was found by a beach-goer lying in the surf near the Rickenbacker Causeway and was retrieved by our staff. He suffered an extreme case of botulism poisoning, likely from eating poisoned fish, and for nearly 6 weeks could not stand at all (which usually spells the end for large wading birds like the heron). It didn’t look good. He was on an IV for several weeks. In early March, events took a turn for the better, and he was briefily able to stand. By the end of March, he can now walk comfortably, and is stalking around happily in one of our pens. Once his weight comes back up, he will be released. It’s such a blessing to see such a positive outcome after a long and intensive rehabilitation of one of our patients. Your continued support makes this level of care possible. Thank you!

On Monday, April 16 Seabird Station is beginning a week-long fundraiser with Groupon Grassroots in order to rescue and treat injured pelicans around Biscayne Bay.

On Monday, April 16 Seabird Station is beginning a week-long fundraiser with Groupon’s philanthropic wing, Groupon Grassroots.

The event works like a regular Groupon deal. From Monday, April 16 to Sunday, April 22, Groupon will collect $5 pledges to support the Seabird Station’s efforts to rescue and treat injured pelicans around Biscayne Bay. When the tipping point is reached, the deal is active. In this case, the collected donations fund the Seabird Station’s growing efforts to search for and rescue pelicans and other seabirds entangled in fishing tackle. Our goal is to see how many trips we can fund in one week.

In the last 4 months, the average cost to search local marinas and recover injured pelicans has been $55 per trip. So, every 11 people who make this pledge will fund one trip to search for and rescue pelicans and other seabirds impacted by marine debris and pollution.

The fastest growing expense associated with rescuing these animals is fuel. This year we expect to spend between $8,000 and $10,000 this year on gasoline alone in our efforts to rescue and care for injured seabirds.

To join the campaign and pledge $5 towards pelican rescue, please CLICK HERE or on the photo above.

Did you know we’re not just about pelicans? Meet Snap, Crackle and Pop, three screech owls our Wildlife Manager rescued March 2nd from a palm tree that had fallen over. Their nest was on the ground, leaving these three-week old owls vulnerable to predators. They were brought into the Seabird Station and are being raised on a tasty selection of their favorite meats. Snap, the largest at 20 grams (1.25 ounces), snaps in delight when he’s fed, while his siblings Crackle (17 grams) and Pop (14 grams) are a little quieter but no less amusing! They will stay with us until they fledge (develop their wing feathers and learn to fly) and then they will be released back near their nest.

Pelican Harbor specializes in seabirds, but accepts any injured wildlife. We’re working hard to protect and promote the natural environment that makes Miami Dade County so special. Last year we treated more than 1,650 brown pelicans, gulls, cormorants, terns, herons, and turtles, along with some more exotic animals, including a kinkajou and a coatimundi. We couldn’t do the work we do without your kindness, generosity and support. We accept all injured wildlife, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, including mammals and reptiles, but no dogs or cats. If you have found an injured animal that you believe needs help, please bring it in or call us at 305-751-9840.
Pelican Harbor Seabird Station is a non-profit, 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to the rescue, rehabilitation and release of sick, injured and orphaned wildlife in and around Miami’s Biscayne Bay. If you’d like to support the Seabird Station through donations, volunteering with us or participating in our annual Pelican Party on April 7th, please check out our website!

On February 25th, we were fortunate to have Miami-Dade Mayor Carlos Jimenez, Parks & Recreation Director Jack Kardys, Commissioner Edmonson and Commissioner Sally Heyman at Pelican Harbor Marina to celebrate the new dockmaster complex. They got a taste of the work we do when they released six pelicans we treated -- these six came to us in January and February of this year with injuries sustained from fishing tackle, and all were rescued in marinas owned and operated by the Miami Dade Parks and Recreation Department. In fact, these county marinas account for 70% of our patient intake. You can see more photos of Seabird Station releases on our Facebook page.

We work closely with municipal, county & state law enforcement & first responders. Five years ago for instance, the Miami Dade Fire Department responded to our call regarding a black-crowned night heron caught in kite rope between two trees. They cut down one tree to free the bird! We’re proud to provide a valuable service to the county by rescuing and rehabilitating Miami wildlife. Our efforts improve the health and safety conditions within Miami Dade, support local wildlife law enforcements efforts and reduce pressure on county budgets.

The Seabird Station recently took delivery of a newly restored work boat. The staff and owners of T-n-T Custom Marine of North Miami volunteered their time and resources to restore it to working order. This was made possible by the donation of a new outboard engine by Mercury Marine.

This boat is now used by the Seabird Station to search for and rescue injured wildlife, primarily around the north end of Biscayne Bay. We are also using it to monitor nearby pelican rookeries. In the last two weeks it has been used extensively as a filming platform by a visiting film crew from Japanese Public Broadcasting.

Our heartfelt thanks go out to T-n-T Curtom Marine and Mercury Marine. Without their support this would not have been possible.
