Education Outreach with Ambassador Animal

PHSS is now offering a unique internship opportunity for college students, recent graduates and high school students interested in native Florida wildlife and environmental issues in South Florida. There are positions available every semester. The specific start and end dates are flexible.

Possible projects include (but are not limited to)

  • Present environmentally-oriented educational programming to area schools, camps, clubs, etc.
  • Animal Handling with Education Ambassador Animals to attend public events (training provided).
  • Develop state-aligned curriculum materials on wildlife and environmental studies.
  • Design Visual and Multi-media educational resources on PHSS data and programs.
  • Contact school districts and private schools to promote and schedule programming.

 

This position may be called upon to assist the animal care staff in the event of a hurricane evacuation or mass-casualty event.

Part-Time Education Internship

Required Skills & Education:

  • College junior or senior with major in Biology, Environmental Science, Education or a closely related field.
  • Speak, read and write English.
  • Comfortable and confident with public speaking.
  • Applicants should have no animal-related allergies.
  • Must be passionate about, and comfortable around, large wild animals.
  • Be able to work politely as part of a team, and independently.
  • Professionally represent PHSS at all times.
  • Valid Florida driver’s license.
  • Must be able to pass a criminal background check.
  • A drug test will be required at the discretion of the executive director. This may occur at any time and for no reason or cause.

Preferred Skills:

  • Spanish-speakers preferred

Facts

  • This internship is unpaid.
  • Medical Insurance is not provided by Pelican Harbor Seabird Station. Interns must carry their own medical insurance.
  • Interns must sign a waiver releasing Pelican Harbor Seabird Station from liability for injury and illness occurring during the internship
  • Part-Time Interns are required to complete 12 hours/week for a minimum of three months (start and end dates flexible).

High School internship

Required Skills & Education:

  • Junior or Senior high school students with a GPA of 3.0 or higher.
  • 16 years or older.
  • Have completed or are currently enrolled in Biology or Environmental Science (Equivalent courses also accepted)
  • Speak, read and write English.
  • Comfortable and confident with public speaking.
  • Applicants should have no animal-related allergies.
  • Must be passionate about, and comfortable around, large wild animals.
  • Be able to work politely as part of a team, and independently.
  • Professionally represent PHSS at all times.
  • Must be able to pass a criminal background check.

  • High School Interns are required to complete 6 hours/week – schedule flexible. Internship certificates are awarded after the completion of 80 hours. Internships can be extended for multiple semesters if students are successful their first semester and express continued interest.
