Pelican Party 2012

JOIN US!

Pelican Harbor Seabird Station will host its 8th annual Pelican Party fundraiser on April 7th, 2012. This year we are celebrating 32 years of serving the greater Miami community through the care and rehabilitation of sick and injured pelicans and other wildlife. Our goal for 2012 is to raise $50,000 to enhance our ability to rescue and treat pelicans in South Florida.

Pelican Party 2012

32 years in the making!

Since 1980, the Seabird Station has provided care and treatment for sick and injured pelicans and other wildlife across the greater Miami area. Thirty two years ago, founders Harry and Darlene Kelton started the Station with a tool shed in Pelican Harbor Marina and a dream: to contribute to their community by rehabilitating the seabirds and shorebirds that make this area so special.

Today, Pelican Harbor is an acknowledged leader in the field of pelican rehabilitation. And the number of animals received by the Seabird Station each year continues to grow: in 2011, we took in 1665 animals of 128 species: that’s well over 20,000 animals in our 32 years of operation! The Seabird Station also provides environmentally-oriented educational programming to area schools and partners with other institutions on conservation-oriented research. All of our work has been possible only because of the continued generous support of members of the community.

We still have a lot of work left to do. We’re committed to reducing further seabird injuries caused by human activity, to expanding education and conservation efforts for urban wildlife in South Florida, and to raising funds to better treat pelicans and other seabirds and shorebirds.

We Need Your Support

This year, we face a unique set of challenges, with growing patient intakes, rising fuel costs and inadequate diagnostic equipment. We have an ambitious goal for our 2012 Pelican Party: $50,000. This will permit us to purchase an X-ray machine and compact vehicle for more rapid pelican rescues.

Today, we transport injured animals with suspected fractures and ingested items to partner veterinarians. Transport can be stressful for the birds, and can delay treatment. An in-house X-ray machine will mean faster treatment, calmer birds and improved recovery times for the thirty or more birds weekly requiring X-rays. Similarly, we receive approximately 150 calls monthly to pick up injured wildlife across Miami Dade -- Florida’s third largest county at 1,946 square miles. Transport depends on the availability of our large van and a financial imperative to reduce costs by reducing the number of trips, where possible. A new compact vehicle will permit the Seabird Station to make more trips, more rapidly and at a lower cost, which will ensure injured pelicans are seen, treated and released more quickly.

Your support will make the difference. Please join us for Pelican Party 2012 -- a fabulous evening of fine food, great auctions and a celebration of our achievements, our struggles and our most memorable moments of the last three decades at Pelican Harbor.

How to share in our celebration

There are many ways to help make this evening a special one for the animals.

1. Book a table or a few seats! It would mean so much to us if we can share our 32nd birthday celebration with you. Tickets start at $45 each and can be purchased by clicking on the link above.

2. Sponsor Pelican Party 2012 and have your logo prominently displayed at the Party and throughout the year! Download our sponsorship package below.

3. Make a donation of cash or an auction item to make this evening an even more memorable one! Please contact tiffany@pelicanharbor.org for more details.

We couldn’t do the work we do without your kindness, generosity and support. And, just as no animal is too small to help so, too, no donation is too small to make a difference. Drop by Pelican Harbor Seabird Station -- you’ll see how good we are at stretching every dollar to help Miami wildlife!
