Betsy B · Ambassador Gopher Tortoise
Betsy B loves digging burrows in her habitat and munching on hibiscus flowers. She is friendly and gentle, and while she does love a lazy afternoon, you might be surprised at how fast she can run when she gets the zoomies!
Adopt Betsy B today and you’ll be directly supporting her and our other turtles’ food and veterinary care.
Gopher tortoise are a keystone species in forests across the southeast United States, as the deep burrows they dig provide shelter and support for over 360 other species of wildlife. These burrows serve a second critical function by creating pathways for water to percolate through soil, which reduces flooding in their habitat.
Betsy B was named by our friends at the Vera Kunsak Charitable Trust, who have been generously supporting our mission for many years. She is named after the first Trustee of the Vera Kunsak Charitable Trust, Elizabeth Bischoff, who is survived by her brother, Doug Bischoff.
