A Deep Dive into UM's Shark Research and Conservation Program

  • Pelican Harbor Marina Multipurpose Room (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

Speaker:  Dr. Catherine Macdonald

Directed by Dr. Catherine Macdonald, the Predator Ecology Lab and Shark Research & Conservation Program (SRC) at the University of Miami conducts science centered broadly on food-web dynamics and the behavioral ecology, conservation biology, and movement ecology of marine predators. Shark tags allow scientists to study everything from the growth to the migratory and residency patterns of sharks. This data can be used to identify areas that are critical for shark mating, pupping, and feeding, as well as locations where sharks are vulnerable to fishing. Better data can help policymakers implement effective management strategies that will improve conservation for threatened shark species!

The Everglades is a one-of-a-kind ecosystem that provides us with numerous benefits and resources. But the once free-flowing River of Grass has been drained and compartmentalized to give way to farming and urban development. These alterations continue to impact our environment and threaten our sustainability.

Roseate Spoonbill Research in the Florida Bay

Audubon’s Everglades Science Center has a long history of monitoring the Roseate Spoonbill (Platalea ajaja) in the Florida Bay, studying their environment and how human actions affect this bird's behavior directly and indirectly. These pink birds are an indicator species for the Everglades Restoration Plan, so studying their population success and ecological interactions tell us a great deal about the health of the ecosystem. Through monitoring, banding, and tracking, scientists have learned a great deal about this beautiful pink bird, but a lot is yet to be understood about how current events will affect the Roseate Spoonbill and the Everglades as a whole.

Join FWC Biologists to learn more about:

  • The history of the Roseate Spoonbill in the Florida Bay

  • Audubon’s Everglades Science Center

  • Tracking and Banding

  • Current ongoing Roseate Spoonbill research
