X:Reefs: Creating hybrid reefs to protect Florida's corals, coastlines, and communities

  • Pelican Harbor Marina Multipurpose Room 1275 Northeast 79th Street Miami, FL, 33138 United States (map)

Climate change is impacting our coastal communities, causing flood events, erosion, and storms that damage communities and infrastructure. To effectively combat these challenges, we must develop innovative, interdisciplinary measures that will reduce these impacts. Led by the University of Miami, the X-REEFS project ("neXt generation Reef Engineering to Enhance Future Structures") is developing hybrid reefs that combine the wave-protection benefits of artificial structures with the ecological benefits of coral reefs. By bringing together specialists in structural engineering, physical and chemical oceanography, reef ecology and restoration, and adaptive biology, X-REEFS will create structures that reduce risk to Florida's coastal communities and promote ecosystem health.
